History of Punk and its relation to Latin America

The history of punk has been told solely focusing on the UK. When there is the focus placed on the US, only white punk bands are brought up.

Some of the bands who predated the punk boom in Europe and had musical sounds that matched the UK punk bands were Latinos. When the Los Angeles punk scene began to take off, many of the people heading the scene were Latino. Punk became huge in Latin America and yet is rarely discussed in the larger conversation of punk culture.

Latinos have had a place within the community, from its inception to its height of popularity in the US, yet we do not often hear of the bands and artists who are a part of it. How we tell history can affect how people will perceive it, which leads to a eurocentric lens placed upon history. How did punk get started, and how were Latinos involved? What events were occurring in Latin America and the United States that made the scene appealing for some?
